Getting started

  1. Log last night. On the Today tab, tap Add last night. Set when you went to bed and when you woke, how many times you woke, and your energy from Wiped to Great.
  2. Tag the day before. Tap any of caffeine, alcohol, exercise, stress, screens or nap, then pick roughly when it happened — morning, afternoon, evening, or within 2h of bed. Timing matters: coffee at 3pm and coffee at 11pm are not the same night.
  3. Come back tomorrow. Insights appear once your log clears the sample gate on both sides of a comparison. Keep logging; the app stays quiet until the data is strong enough to mean something.

Logging

Can I fill in nights I missed?

Yes. When you create an entry, tap Night of and pick the date. You can backfill nights going back years, and the app will use them immediately in later insights.

How do I edit or delete a night?

Tap the card on the Today tab, or open the night from the History tab, and change whatever you need. To delete, swipe left on the row in History, or use the Delete section at the bottom of the entry.

What does each tag mean?

Tags describe the waking day before the night, not the night itself.

  • Caffeine — coffee, tea, energy drinks, pre-workout.
  • Alcohol — any alcoholic drink.
  • Exercise — a workout or anything you would call exercise.
  • Stress — a demanding or tense day, work or personal.
  • Screens — phone, laptop or TV late in the day.
  • Nap — daytime sleep.

You can tag the same factor in more than one time bucket in a single day.

Why is my bedtime listed as the previous day?

A "night" is labelled by the morning you woke up. If you went to bed at 1:20am on Saturday and woke at 8am, that is Saturday's entry — the app handles the after-midnight bedtime for you.

Widget

How does the widget work?

Add the SleepHabit widget to your Home Screen, tap Start when you get into bed and Stop when you wake up. The widget only remembers those two times; the next time you open the app it turns them into a night for you.

The small and medium sizes are supported. If you leave the night running, the widget switches to Still in bed? after 16 hours rather than counting forever.

The widget recorded a night but I can't see it

The app drops a widget night in four cases, rather than writing something it cannot vouch for:

  • you had already logged that night by hand — your entry is never overwritten by the widget;
  • the session was shorter than an hour;
  • Start was tapped after 6am, which is a wake-up rather than a bedtime;
  • you recorded two nights from the widget without opening the app in between — only the later one is kept.

A session left running past 16 hours is filed as a 16-hour night and labelled as capped, so check the times on the card afterwards. If a saved night is still waiting to be confirmed, Today shows a not saved yet card with a retry button.

Why does the widget's night say energy 3 with 0 wakings?

The widget can only know when you got into bed and when you woke, so it fills in the middle of the scale and asks you to correct it. Tap the night on the Today tab — the card says From the widget — confirm energy and tags — and set how you actually felt and what you did the day before.

Insights

Why don't I see any insights yet?

Insights only appear when there is enough data on both sides of a comparison and the difference is big enough to be meaningful. If the gap is thin, showing nothing is the honest answer.

  • Free: 14-day window (7-day also available), at least 3 nights with the factor and 3 without, and at least 5 nights logged.
  • Unlocked: 30 / 90 / 365 days or all time, at least 5 nights with and 5 without, and at least 14 nights logged.
  • Effect floor: 15 minutes of sleep timing, 0.5 night wakings or 0.3 energy points.

One structural trap: if you tag the same thing every single night, there is no "without" group to compare it against, so that factor can only ever produce a "how often" fact — and a timing comparison, if you tag it in different time buckets on different nights.

Keep logging. The Insights tab tells you which factor is closest to unlocking next.

What exactly is being compared?

Averages of your own nights, grouped by whether the factor was present. For example: average time to fall asleep on nights with caffeine within 2h of bed versus nights without it, or versus nights where caffeine happened in the afternoon. The app also counts how often something happens — "you logged alcohol on 12 of 30 nights, and woke at least once on 9 of them."

Are these results proof that something causes bad sleep?

No. They are associations in your own data — correlation, not causation. Something that shows up together may share another cause, and small samples move around. SleepHabit is not a medical device and does not diagnose or treat anything; for a real sleep problem, see a clinician.

The one-time unlock

What does the purchase include?

Logging and your full history are free, forever, and the last 14 days of insights are free too (7 days is also selectable). A single purchase unlocks the long view: insight windows of 30, 90 and 365 days plus all-time comparisons, all computed over every night you have logged. Whichever window is open, you can expand it to the full ranked list on either tier — the purchase adds history to compare, not rows per window. It is a one-time purchase: no subscription, nothing renews.

How much is it?

US$6.99, or the equivalent in your storefront (¥48 in China mainland). The exact price is always shown on the paywall and on the App Store product page, in your local currency, before you confirm.

I bought it before. How do I get it back?

Settings → Restore purchase. The unlock belongs to your Apple Account, so restoring on a new device with the same account works. If nothing happens, check that you are signed in to the App Store with the account you bought it on, then try again with a network connection.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us: visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose the purchase. We cannot issue or reverse App Store payments.

Your data

Where is my data stored?

Only on your iPhone, inside the app. There is no account and no server, so nothing is uploaded and we cannot see your log. The Home Screen widget keeps the start and stop times of a night in a small container that the app and the widget share on the same device — nothing more. See the privacy policy for the full detail.

How do I back up or move to a new phone?

Settings → Export backup creates a JSON file and opens the share sheet; save it to Files, iCloud Drive or anywhere you trust. On the new phone, install SleepHabit, then Settings → Import backup and pick that file.

Importing replaces everything currently in the app — it is a restore, not a merge — and the app asks you to confirm before it writes anything. A file that fails validation is rejected and your existing data is left untouched.

If you use iCloud Backup or a computer backup, the app's data may also be included in that device backup, handled by iOS.

How do I delete everything?

Delete individual nights from History, or delete the app to remove all entries and settings at once. Because nothing is stored on a server, deletion is immediate and there is no copy left for us to erase. Export a backup first if you might want the data later.

Reminders

When does the reminder fire?

By default at 8:30am, and you can change the time or switch it off in Settings. The app schedules a week of one-time reminders that skip any night you have already logged, so it stops nagging once your entry is in.

I'm not getting notifications.

Check three things: the toggle is on in SleepHabit's Settings; notifications are allowed for SleepHabit in iOS Settings → Notifications; and a Focus mode or Do Not Disturb is not holding them back. If permission was declined earlier, re-enable it in iOS Settings and the app will pick it up the next time it schedules.

Troubleshooting

The Save button is greyed out.

Save stays disabled while the entry is invalid. The usual causes: the wake time is earlier than or too close to bedtime (a night must be at least an hour), or the note is over 280 characters. The form shows which rule is failing.

I reinstalled the app and my history is gone.

Deleting an app removes its local data, which is the trade-off of keeping everything on-device. If you exported a backup, import it from Settings. If you had iCloud Backup enabled, restoring the device backup may bring the app's data back.

Does SleepHabit need internet?

No. Logging, history and insights all work offline. The only network use is StoreKit when you buy or restore the unlock.
